Coffee is a daily ritual for millions — but what happens after the last drop is poured? In the UK alone, an estimated 500,000 tonnes of spent coffee grounds are discarded each year, often ending up in landfill where they contribute to harmful methane emissions.
One social enterprise, Grounds for Good, is changing that narrative with a creative and impactful solution: a Coffee Recycling Scheme that’s as good for the planet as it is for people.
About Grounds for Good
Grounds for Good was founded by Dr. Rosie Oretti, a former NHS consultant psychiatrist who left her medical career to launch a purpose-driven coffee business. With a clear mission to blend environmental sustainability with social justice, the company operates at the intersection of circular economy, mental health advocacy, and community wellbeing.
The Coffee Recycling Scheme
At the heart of their circular model is an innovative recycling scheme that collects used coffee grounds from cafés, workplaces, and hospitality venues. These grounds are then up-cycled into luxury sustainable products such as:
- Home and wellness goods
- Handcrafted soaps and scrubs
- Chocolate, vodka, preserves & more
This initiative diverts organic waste from landfill while creating opportunities for ethical manufacturing and education.
As a social enterprise, a proportion of Grounds for Good profits go to Welsh homelessness charity, The Wallich.
The recycling scheme is a powerful example of how businesses can integrate environmental responsibility with social impact — and they’re now inviting more venues to join the movement.
Why Join?
For cafés, coffee shops, and hospitality venues, joining the scheme is a simple yet meaningful way to:
- Reduce waste and carbon footprint
- Support mental health and rehabilitation programs
- Engage customers with a visible sustainability initiative
- Align with ESG goals and responsible business practices
Collection points are easy to set up, and Grounds for Good provides all the guidance needed to get started.
Get Involved
Grounds for Good is currently expanding the scheme and actively seeking new partners in Cardiff. Whether it’s a small café or a large hospitality chain, every venue has the power to make a difference — one coffee ground at a time.
