Beyond Gold – the next ten years for Food Cardiff

Members of the Food Cardiff network gathered at the Temple of Peace in Cardiff to celebrate the first ten years of the network, which culminated with Cardiff achieving the Gold Sustainable Food Places award in 2024.

Delegates worked together to explore what people in Cardiff want to see by 2035 when it comes to sustainable food – and work together on solutions for how we get there.

The event opened with the launch of the Cardiff Food Conversations report and reflections from the people who were involved in the programme.

Food Cardiff hosted a series of Food Conversations in March 2025 which brought together more than 90 participants from diverse communities across the city to explore what people value about food, what’s not working, and what needs to change to create a healthier, fairer, and more sustainable food system.

Workshops through the day were based on developing practical, future-focussed responses to the priorities identified through the Food Conversations:

  • Embed Food Literacy for All: Explore ways to provide lifelong skills in cooking, nutrition, sustainability and culture for everyone in Cardiff.
  • Support Local & Sustainable Food Supply Chains: Identify actions to increase local, seasonal, and culturally appropriate food.
  • Make Healthy Food Affordable and Accessible: Explore strategies to make healthy food the easiest choice for all communities.
  • Reduce Food & Packaging Waste: Discuss actions to reduce food and packaging waste.

Locally-sourced, sustainable catering for the event was provided by The Tidy Kitchen Company which also provided the opportunity for people to network and further share ideas through the day.

The event was also an opportunity to introduce the new Food Cardiff Coordinator, Lucinda Jones, to the network. Lucinda joins the Food Cardiff team with more than eight years’ experience in private sector roles working on a range of sustainability and supply chain programmes, most recently with the Sustainable Sourcing team at Unilever.

Lucinda also has a strong connection with the farming community, having grown up on a small family farm.

Commenting on the event, Lucinda said:

“We have a brilliant, very active network in Cardiff. It was great today to bring everyone together to celebrate ten years of impact and our Gold Sustainable Food Places award – as well as putting our collective heads together to look forward to the next ten years.

“Launching the Food Conversations insights today meant we could share insights from across the communities in Cardiff as the basis for workshopping the solutions, ideas and connections for what comes next for Food Cardiff.

“I’m thrilled to be joining Food Cardiff at such an exciting time, bringing my experience from both the corporate and farming worlds together, and working to coordinate all of the brilliant work that’s happening across our network,” she said.
