The Jady Brunch Top 10

In the first of our guest spots, local food blogger The Jady Brunch gives her Top 10 tips for brunching in Cardiff…

Brunch (Bruhnch)

  1. A meal that serves as both breakfast and lunch.

It seems like brunch is definitely having its time and Cardiff is raising the bar when it comes to this delicious mealtime. Here are my Top 10 brunch spots that you simply MUST try:

Penylan Pantry

Situated in the heart of Penylan, you will find the best avocado on toast. It’s the perfect place to spend the morning, but be quick as it gets busy very quickly. It also doubles up as a deli that stocks all the best local goods from cheese to chocolate. They have recently relaunched their breakfast/brunch menu and it’s totally worth a visit. The porridge I had on my last visit was lavished with organic honey, rhubarb compote and didn’t disappoint.

Waterloo Gardens Tea House

Just a hop and a skip from Penylan Pantry, you will find this little gem. Although it’s a tea house, they also make a damn good cup of coffee and a spectacular version of Eggs Benedict. If you’re on the sweeter side, I would suggest their toasted teacake with salted butter and jam.

Juno Lounge

All day brunch = The Dream. In the heart of Wellfield Road you will find Juno Lounge; with a whole-page brunch menu, you’ll be sure to find something you love here. The Lounge eggs and full breakfast are where it’s at – unless you have a sweet tooth, then they have stacks of pancakes that are drizzled with syrup and fruit that look flippin’ marvellous.

Stag Coffee

If you feel like something naughty and love a big portion, Stag is the place. It is super cosy in the winter (made even better by the best gingerbread latte around) and has the cutest outdoor seating area for when the weather is warmer. I suggest the chorizo scrambled eggs with doorstop toast – not a place for calorie counters.

The Plan

This is quite possibly the best cup of coffee in the city. Sit and watch the people of the arcade come and go whilst tucking into Eggs Benedict with a good read. They do daily specials and deliver everything with a smile.

Locke & Remedy

Quite a new addition, Locke & Remedy is the epitome of coolness, serving up hearty breakfasts by morn and the best cocktails and burgers by night. Anywhere that serves avocado on sourdough is a winner in my eyes and L&R most certainly does this well.

Something Cardiff needed was a good place for all things doughy and delicious and Brod answered all of our pastry dreams when they opened up in Pontcanna. Like walking into a Pinterest board of dream interiors, expect the finest crumbly pastries, good coffee and a relaxed atmosphere.

This is my favourite eggs benedict in Cardiff and the go-to place in Pontcanna for some good quality brunching. You can enjoy your food outside, where you are guaranteed to see at least 10 cute dogs (and cute owners) walk past.

The Early Bird

Tucked away in Cathays, this sunshine yellow newbie is everything you could want from a brunch spot. Amazing coffee – check. Sourdough toast – check. Smashed avocado – check. The best playlist – check. It’s an all-round winner and somewhere that I think is really going to take off.

St Mary’s Street Market and Riverside and Roath Farmers’ Markets

Doesn’t food taste better when you know it’s handmade and local? The Cardiff m arkets are a MUST. My favourites are Mr Croquewich for the ultimate cheese toastie and Coffee am Byth for a spectacular cappuccino at St Mary’s Market on a Friday, Naturally Kind for the best guilt-free desserts at Riverside Market on a Sunday morning and The Pwdin Cart if you fancy something naughtier in Roath Farmers’ Market on a Saturday morning. There is no better way to spend a weekend in my opinion.
